The Spider Web Trees Of Pakistan

Just before my last few exams.

This from flood-stricken Pakistan:

An unexpected side-effect of the flooding in parts of Pakistan has been that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees to escape the rising flood waters. Because of the scale of the flooding and the fact that the water has taken so long to recede, many trees have become cocooned in spiders webs. People in this part of Sindh have never seen this phenomenon before but, they also report that there are now far fewer mosquitoes than they would expect, given the amount of stagnant, standing water that is around. It is thought that the mosquitoes are getting caught in the spiders web, thus, reducing the risk of malaria, which would be one blessing for the people of Sindh, facing so many other hardships after the floods.

Via some dudes facebook. Stupid social networking.

Makes me think of some lectures I’ve watched where it’s strongly suggested that evolution – both biological and cultural – will react to current climates much faster, and obviously with greater efficiency than any purposeful human effort to change or save the world.
Yay for long sentences. And Paul McCartney. And Wings. And clarinets.

Hitchens And Fry Get Angry; Act Like Bosses

After their debate with Ann Widdecombe, Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry sit down with Ann Widdecombe to tell her what it is about The Ten Commandments that makes them so angry. Typically, she doesn’t listen.

From Widdecombe’s BBC documentary ‘The Bible – A History’.

International Space Station Flies Over Earth

I had a dream just like this once:

A time-lapse taken from the front of the International Space Station as it orbits our planet at night. This movie begins over the Pacific Ocean and continues over North and South America before entering daylight near Antarctica. Visible cities, countries and landmarks include (in order) Vancouver Island, Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles. Phoenix. Multiple cities in Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. Mexico City, the Gulf of Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, El Salvador, Lightning in the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Lake Titicaca, and the Amazon. Also visible is the earths ionosphere (thin yellow line), a satellite (55sec) and the stars of our galaxy. Raw data was downloaded from;

Morgan Freeman And Friends Sing About Quantum Physics

Now you can sing-a-long too!
And here you were thinking that the greatest Mr Morgan could ever amount to was being God in a Jim Carrey film.

From Freeman’s show Through The Wormhole – on the Science Discovery channel or some shit. I dunno. I don’t have a tv.

A Priest With A Brain Mocks Creationism

Finally a man of the cloth has some common sense on the issue of whether creationism should be taught in schools – a question to which the obvious answer – an absolute no – has long been ignored.

And remember kids, education and religion don’t mix!
The more you know…
